Heated Rollers have been around since the sixties and are a very effective way to achieve curls and waves in the hair. They work by breaking down the hair's hydrogen bonds, found in the cortex that causes the hair to bend and become curly.
The hair moulds to the heat of the roller once it is in place. However if the bonds are broken the hair is prevented from holding its original form but can re-form when exposed to moisture.
Once the hair is moulded to the heat of the roller it is reformed. Letting it cool down before taking the roller out gives an extra advantage to actually set the style in the way it has been formed. This is how you will get longer life out of your curls/waves.
Different size rollers can help to create different types of waves and curls. Smaller rollers when taken out will give a spiral effect curl, but these can be dressed out by running your fingers through, spreading the curls and dragging them out to get more of a loose tousled effect.
Large rollers are great for adding volume in all hair types. To achieve more of an Eva Longoria look (Desperate Housewives, where her hair is big, bouncy and wavy, large rollers are required to roll in the hair in big sections. This gives maximum root lift in order to gain extreme body.
However it's always been quite difficult when it comes to applying heated rollers to the hair.
