Most hair products on the market nowadays are there to give shine to your hair. However, to avoid a greasy scalp, you need to be careful about what ingredients are contained in them.

Many shampoos contain silicones that coat the hair and smooth the cuticle but don't actually treat the hair from the inside. So, if the hair has been bleached and is slightly porous it may look fantastic but the shampoo will not be doing the hair any good on the inner core.

We have found that when using non salon conditioners, a lot of conditioner has to be used on the hair to get it to feel smooth and silky. However, with professional salon conditioners and treatments only the smallest amount is needed to achieve the same result and they last a lot longer. So, when you think about it spending a little bit extra on a professional shampoo and conditioner is well worth it!

Blonde hair is the hardest hair to get shine on, mostly when it is bleached. During bleaching the natural pigment of the hair's colour is being stripped and the longer the bleach is left on the more porous the hair becomes. As bleach swells in the hair the cuticle is raised so the hair looks roughened and is less shiny.

The simplicity of light is the other reason for achieving shine on blonde hair. Light will bounce off darker / vibrant shades (such as reds, browns, mahoganies and violet tones) causing a reflection which makes the hair looks shiny. As these colours are glossy anyway, when under a light they become even more vibrant and healthy looking. For blonde shades, however, the light doesn't bounce off the hair but travels through it, making hair look dull. This is because when the hair is blonde on the inner core there are gaps in the hair where it may have been bleached so the light can pass through the hair, whereas darker tones do not let this happen.

Using a shampoo and conditioner which contain the right ingredients will fill in any gaps along each hair strand and last there so that when the hair is dried the light will bounce off it, making it look shiny. The idea is to smooth the hair surface, once these ingredients have gone into the cortex of the hair, so that the hair is being treated and made shiny at the same time.

So, by using the right haircare products blondes can get the same shine as a redhead or brunette!
