Many Americans are challenged with obesity. The lap band offers hope for many.

With the challenges of obesity facing many Americans today, more and more people are considering lap band surgery. Unlike stomach stapling, where a portion of the stomach is surgically sealed, the lap band restricts the stomach with an adjustable gastric band made from materials that are biologically compatible, which means that gastric bands can remain inside the body long term without causing distress or damage. The stomach remains intact, and the band can be adjusted to fit the needs of the patient and is installed and can be removed laparoscopically as necessary. The band itself is adjusted by introducing a saline solution into an access port left just below the skin's surface, and as the patient loses weight, the band can be adjusted accordingly.

The lap band restricts the stomach so that a small pouch is created at the top of the stomach that only holds about a half a cup of food. An adult stomach can normally hold about six cups of food, and when the top of the stomach is reached, the stomach communicates to the brain that the person is full. With the small pouch, the food reaches the top of the stomach a lot sooner, giving the patient the sensation of being full a lot sooner than usual. The food then slowly passes to the lower stomach, where it is digested and passes normally through the rest of the digestive tract. In this way, the natural systems of the body remain in place, and the lap band recipient feels hungry less often and full with smaller quantities of food.

The lap band has proven to be a very effective way for most morbidly obese patients to get their weight under control and has been effective in helping those patients with diabetes and other weight related health problems gain greater control of both their eating habits and their health. It is less invasive than other surgical methods and more readily reversible should the need arise. The lab band is a safer, more manageable option for people fighting obesity and attempting to gain greater control of their lives.

For anyone facing morbid obesity, the lap band has proven to be a reliable alternative to more drastic methods, and a more effective means of weight management than the various fad diets constantly flooding the marketplace.
