Sensei John Mirrione is joining the growing online communities that are healing the pain of rape. He is encouraging womens empowerment in hopes that such a community will give aid to those that are victims of rape and violence in their lives.
Sensei John is the director of an organization called Harmony by Karate, which is a karate school located within the Reebok Sports Club in New York. Through a combination of meditation, philosophical study, breath work, and martial arts, he helps students develop harmony with their environment.
These are all aspects not only of martial arts, but also ones that are important in helping victims of rape and other acts of violence. Sensei John helps to share these ideals through his teachings of Harmony by Karate. His philosophy of meditation, practice, focus, and discipline is a great tool used to improve womens self-worth.
The keys to teaching women's self-defense are self-realization of their physical power, prevention strategies, environmental awareness, risk reduction, and risk avoidance. With these, along with basic self-defense techniques, Sensei John teaches women of all ages how to protect them
selves so they do not become victims of violence and rape.
Sensei John himself was a victim of bullying in his own neighborhood at a very young age, but used karate as a way to build self-confidence and security, and overcame the problem. He now teaches others to seek the spiritual power within themselves, so they can do the same. He sees the bully as being a victim as well, and believes that those who abuse have likely been abused as well. Their surroundings teach this behavior, and he believes that the ideals used in martial arts can be used to counter-act and defeat these destructive environmental factors. More importantly, he thinks these patterns can be understood and changed in society.
Through discipline, meditation, and work on the spiritual self, Sensei John believes that anyone can build up their self-esteem and learn to defend themselves. Everyone can be brought to a place of balance and harmony, but also everyone can be helped. This is true for all the victims of rape and other forms of violence.
Sensei John has taught his version of the martial arts through radio, television, and writing, for several decades. His style is not just a form of martial arts, but it is a philosophy of life that will help anyone who masters it.
